Word of the Week #cost/use #cost/wear

cost per wear/cost per use - the original cost of the product (plus maintenance) divided by how many times it will be used or worn (in the case of clothing)

Cost/wear or cost/use is an important metric in sustainability and zero waste because it is a direct indicator of the quality of the object, as well as its value to the purchaser. Even if an object was expensive originally if it is worn numerous times the cost decreases per wear. Maintenance is included in this calculation because you might be more likely to try to repair a more expensive product instead of totally replacing it. Then once it's repaired you can get more use out of it! Buying more expensive, quality pieces is an upfront investment but it's one easy way to keep goods out of landfills and reduce the amount of resources that go into producing goods since less goods are made overall.
